ATS guides by system

A clean, single-column resume works in every applicant tracking system. The application around it differs: some systems want an account per employer, some autofill a long form from your file, some take one page and a link. Compare them here, then open the guide for the system you are about to face.

Guides by system

What stays the same everywhere

One column, standard headings, no tables or text boxes, contact details in the body of the page, and text you can select. The details are in ATS resume formatting: what to avoid. For how these systems fit into hiring as a whole, see the ATS landscape for job seekers.

FAQ

Which ATS is the most common?

It depends on the employer's size. Jobscan reports Workday at more than 40% of the Fortune 500 in 2026. Across its broader 2025 sample of about 12,000 companies, Greenhouse (19.3%), Lever (16.6%), Workday (15.9%) and iCIMS (15.3%) are close to each other. In Germany, Personio is the most common HR tool on company websites.

How can I tell which ATS a company uses?

Click Apply and look at the address of the application page. Most systems host it on their own domain, such as myworkdayjobs.com, greenhouse.io or jobs.lever.co. The table above lists what to look for.

Do I need a different resume for each ATS?

No. One clean, single-column file with standard headings works across all of them. What changes between systems is the application around the file: accounts, autofill and questions. What should change per application is the wording, tailored to each job.

Do all applicant tracking systems accept PDF?

Every system compared here lists PDF among its accepted or parseable formats, except Personio, where the employer's form shows the allowed types. Use a PDF with selectable text; a scanned PDF is an image to every parser.
